Call for Submissions – Youth Grant: The United Way offers Youth Summer Grant for youth who are passionate about raising awareness and/or promoting a cause in the County and City of Peterborough. This program provides funding of up to $500 for projects that are designed and implemented by youth for youth. Projects should be related to an important issue in our community and should be designed to make a positive contribution to peers, school, or broader community. Previous grants helped students at Crestwood build a climbing wall, helped funding the KAOS Driver Skills Rodeo, and more. Call for Nominations: The United Way of Peterborough & District is calling for nominations for the 2008 Scholfield Award of Community Distinction. The award, created in 2004, will be presented to a resident or organization within the boundaries of the City and County of Peterborough “recognizing and celebrating outstanding contributions to community building.” Any individual or organization may nominate a candidate. Children’s Coat Drive: The United Way’s Coats for Kids program invites residents of Peterborough City and County to donate children’s coats as they clean out closets this spring. All usable items will be cleaned and then distributed to families in November. Children’s coats and snow pants, especially youth sizes 7-18 are particularly needed. Please, no rips, tears, or stains. Items can be taken to Kent Cleaners, Rocky’s Cleaners, Ferguson Cleaners, Windsor’s Cleaners, and Grainger Cleaners in Peterborough, and Rocky’s Cleaners in Lakefield. Wildflower Walk: The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority hosts its annual Mother’s Day Wildflower Walk from 2 - 3:30 p.m. at the Ganaraska Forest Centre (Cold Springs Camp Rd., just west of Elizabethville). Visitors can enjoy a guided and informative walk through the forest while identifying spring flowers such as trillium, trout lily, wild ginger and marsh marigold. Everyone is welcome. Awareness Day & Fundraiser: The ME/FM Association of Peterborough hosts an Awareness Day for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), Fibromyalgia, and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities from 6 - 9 p.m. at Chapters (Lansdowne St., Peterborough). ME/FM/MCS are very real, serious and debilitating multi-system disorders. To date, there is no cure. Anyone, at any age, including children, can fall ill. BBQ Fundraiser: The Kawartha Blazers Sledge Hockey hosts a BBQ Fundraiser from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Sobey's Towerhill (501 Towerhill Rd., Peterborough). The Kawartha Blazers Sledge Hockey team is a hockey team dedicated to kids with physical disabilities. Sledges and sticks are used to propel the sledge player around the ice. Fitness: The Heart and Stroke Foundation presents the Ultimate Race from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Kawartha Downs (1382 County Rd. 28, Fraserville). Guests are invited to “come horse around at the Downs!” Get a team of four together and join in some fun and friendly competition. The day will include a bike parade at 11:30 a.m., family events at noon, corporate teams at 1:30 and media teams at 3 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for win, place, show and the best-decorated bike.
