Seed Exchange: Urban Tomato and partners present Seedy Saturday! Peterborough's Annual Seed Exchange from 1 - 4 p.m. at St. James Church (221 Romaine St., Peterborough). All are invited to come trade and/or buy local organic heirloom seeds, learn about exciting food and gardening projects in the community and gain the tools, skills and resources needed to get growing. Tickets are free with donations for local food banks encouraged.

Workshop: The Camp Kawartha Environment Centre presents a Workshop Passive Solar Design from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre (2505 Pioneer Rd., just south of Trent University, Peterborough). Guest speaker Melanie Scott with Solares Design Build, Inc., interior designer and past student of the SBCD program will present. Suggested donation $5. Lecture: Camp Kawartha Environment Centre presents Passive Solar Design from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre (2505 Pioneer Rd., just south of Trent University, Peterborough). Want to learn how to take advantage of free heating from the sun and lessen your dependence on fossil fuels? Join sustainable design consultant Melanie Scott as she discusses the time-tested fundamentals of passive solar design for residential construction. Sugar Bush: Wheeler's Maple Syrup Sugar Camp presents March Break Maple Festival from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at 1001 Highland Line, Lanark Highlands (McDonalds Corners). Bring the kids to see how maple syrup is made at the sugar bush. Sleigh rides, taffy-on-snow and artisans in the Museum on weekends, tours, nature trails, heritage displays, pancake meals, and maple products for sale. If you work with youth this workshop is for you. Join Jacob Rodenburg, an environmental educator for over 20 years, as he explores strategies to reconnect youth to nature. Sugar Bush: The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority presents Maple Syrup Day from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Ganaraska Forest Centre (10585 Cold Springs Camp Rd., Campbellcroft). Tour the sap collecting route, visit the sugar shack, and hear tales of traditional maple syrup making around a campfire. Then settle in for a pancake feast, face painting and story telling. You might even meet some interesting characters from long ago who will enlighten you on this sweet tradition. Tickets are $20 family; $8 adult; $4 child, student or senior.

Sugar Bush: The Waring House and Prince Edward County Maple Producers hosts the 9th annual Maple in the Country from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. events located throughout the county. Over five thousand visitors and locals enjoy the sweet treats of March in this self-directed, two-day celebration, with pancake breakfasts, tours of maple bushes, sugar shack demonstrations, music, dancing, shopping, fine dining, family activities, and so much more. Sugar Bush: Waverley Brook Farm hosts Sugar Shack tours from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at 1632 Old Donald Rd. (Haliburton). Come visit the farm during the end of March-April Monday to Saturday for the ultimate maple syrup experience. Nestled at the foot of the sugar bush, the Sugar Shack billows steam out the top, while sap is being boiled into maple syrup. For more information call (613) 278-2090.

Sugar Bush: The Norwood Lions Club and Linlor Farm presents 9th Annual Maplefest from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Linor Farm is located 30 minutes east of Peterborough, on the 4th line of Asphodel, south on County Road #2. Enjoy pancakes, sausage, fresh maple syrup,taffy on snow, tours and trails. Activities for the kids include pony rides, face painting,"goofy golf" and play area. You can even try operating a backhoe. Fundraiser: The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters presents The 21st Annual OFAH/GFC Conservation Dinner and Auction at the Cobourg Lions Community Centre (157 Elgin St. East, Cobourg). Auction prizes range from beautiful paintings, to VIA rail trips, to unique artwork at this event in support of the outdoor education program at the Ganaraska Forest Centre. Fundraiser: Camp Kawartha hosts its annual Green-in-Motion Fundraiser from 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre (2505 Pioneer Rd., just south of Trent University, Peterborough). Bring the family and walk/run/bike along the Rotary Trail, or enjoy a leisurely nature hike in the beautiful Trent wildlife sanctuary. There will be refreshments, entertainment, and prizes. Workshop: Transition Town Peterborough offers a course in Ecological Garden Design beginning at 7 p.m. at Sadleir House (751 George St. N., Peterborough). Instructor is Trent Rhode will teach about food production with an emphasis on perennial edible landscapes and exploring what it means to allow nature to do the work while increasing yields and decreasing inputs. Topics will include companion planting, basic landscape design processes, intro to soil food web and soil ecology, nutrient cycling and perennial edibles and medicinals. Scheduling is over two weeks to provide time for home study. Books are available for use. Complete course is 16 hrs. Tickets are $40; $20 for seniors and students or pay what you can. Workshop: The Transition Reskilling Institute hosts an Ecological Garden Design from 7 - 9 p.m. at Sadleir House (751 George St. N., Peterborough). Learn about using Ecological Principles to reduce work while increasing yield using sustainable land use systems. Complete course is 16 hrs - first evening as above; Sat. This exhibition offers hands-on exploration of the science, history and issues in Canada’s water supply. Visitors are invited to explore unique display pods, each addressing a different aspect of this important subject. Tree Planting: The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) seeks landowners interested in planting trees in 2010. Some funding and technical assistance is available to support landowners wishing to plant trees within GRCA jurisdiction. Benefits of planting trees include the protection of soil and water, increased habitat for wildlife, increased renewable natural resource, and enhanced property values. Schools are encouraged to consider tree planting within school yards with assistance from GRCA staff.
