Since the demise of the major Toronto jazz clubs, it has
been challenging to book international jazz performers for
Peterborough. This year we are bringing several
south-of-the border performers to town in two fall Can-Am
musical ventures.
Ottawa bassist John Geggie, best known for his work with
D.D. Jackson and Chelsea Bridge, has directed a jazz series at
the National Arts Centre for seven years.
At these events he invites a wide range of performers to
join him on stage. After their Saturday October 18/08 NAC
warm-up, we are delighted to bring him and his guests to the
Market Hall for a follow-up performance exploring the music
of Charlie Parker. Joining John on stage will be acclaimed
Canadian drummer Ted Warren, and a front line duo from
New York: trumpeter Marcus Printup and tenor sax player
Ted Nash.
Ted Warren’s past Peterborough appearances include dates
with Emilie-Claire Barlow and the Boss Brass. Printup and
Nash are star performers in Wynton Marsalis’ Lincoln Centre
Jazz Orchestra, the #1 jazz big band in the world. Nash is
part of Printup’s 2007 quintet recording of Charlie Parker
music, one of seven Printup releases as leader. Printup has
also toured and recorded with Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves,
and Marcus Roberts. Apart from Nash’s eight recordings as
leader, he appears on those of many other American jazz
stars- LCJO (4), Wynton Marsalis (4), Thad Jones/Mel Lewis (5),
Don Ellis, Louis Bellson, and dozens more.
Robi Botos Trio featuring Pat LaBarbera

This concert is no longer a trio concert by Robi Botos, but a combined show
with one one-hour set by Robi's trio and a second one hour set with Pat
LaBarbera on tenor sax to make it a quartet.
Robi Botos has thrilled Market Hall audiences with his solo
performance in April 2006 and with Dave Young’s quartet
the following October. Now it is time to hear him with his
own full band playing his own music.
Botos, a self-taught Hungarian who has made Toronto
his home since 1998 is barely into his 30s but already
has international recognition for many performing
accomplishments. He won the 2004 solo piano competition
at Montreux, opened there for Oscar Peterson the
following year, was voted keyboard player of the year
at the 2007 National Jazz Awards, and recently won first
prize in the 2008 “Great American Jazz Piano Competition’’
in Jacksonville Fla. His quartet with Phil Dwyer and Terry
Lynne Carrington was nominated for a 2006 Juno award
for best contemporary jazz album of the year.
Besides leading his own groups, often the Botos Brothers
trio with Frank on drums and Louie on bass, Robi Botos is
an in-demand accompanist of Canadian and international
performers and just completed a European tour with jazz
diva Roberta Gambarini in August 2008.

Join our send-off party as we celebrate our 100th concert and completion of our 20th concert season with a rare triple- bill featuring many of our long-time musical friends and a fresh new face.
Time Warp debuted for us in October 1992, with follow-up visits in 1993, 1997, and 1999, more Peterborough appearances than any other jazz band ever. It will be the “second era” Time Warp band appearing in April, featuring the magic sympatico of Mike Murley on tenor saxophone and trumpeter Kevin Turcotte, along with co-leaders Al Henderson on bass and Barry Elmes on drums.
For the second set, bassist/pianist Don Thompson and guitarist Reg Schwager will support young vocalist Diana Panton, recently nominated for a 2009 jazz vocal Juno award for her second CD release. “She’s so soulful….” says vocalist Sheila Jordan. Aesthetically wonderful” says Yusef Lateef. “She really knocked me out” says Don Thompson. “The hottest young jazz singing prospect in Canada” says Now Magazine in their cover story. “We had to turn away about 200 people…and we had to start late to seat everybody who could get tickets ( in the 700 capacity theatre)…because some people queued for an hour.” “We Remember Ella” event in Hamilton featuring Panton with the David Braid Trio.
After Diana Panton’s set the bands will merge into the entirely different sound of the Barry Elmes Quintet, (prior appearances 1995 and 1997) with bassist Steve Wallace joining Elmes, Schwager and the two horns.
These bands and musicians have played Peterborough repeatedly because they are immensely talented and popular. They are part of Canada’s jazz elite. Time Warp and the Barry Elmes Quintet collectively hold five National Jazz Awards as “acoustic band of the year”. Elmes and Don Thompson have multiple honours as Canadian jazz “musician of the year”. They and Schwager, Murley, and Turcotte are regularly honoured individually as best Canadians on their instruments. Thompson is also a 2009 Juno nominee for best acoustic jazz recording. These are very special musicians and this show will be a very special jazz event.
Fourth Concert
There are just three performances being offered because
the other series concert bookings had to be cancelled at
the last minute due to a scheduling conflict.
