Meeting: The Peterborough Public Library offers an after school club for kids ages 6 - 12 from 4 - 4:45 p.m. at the Library (345 Aylmer St., Peterborough). Children’s Coat Drive: The United Way’s Coats for Kids program invites residents of Peterborough City and County to donate children’s coats as they clean out closets this spring. All usable items will be cleaned and then distributed to families in November. Children’s coats and snow pants, especially youth sizes 7-18 are particularly needed. Please, no rips, tears, or stains. Items can be taken to Kent Cleaners, Rocky’s Cleaners, Ferguson Cleaners, Windsor’s Cleaners, and Grainger Cleaners in Peterborough, and Rocky’s Cleaners in Lakefield. Call for Submissions – Youth Grant: The United Way offers Youth Summer Grant for youth who are passionate about raising awareness and/or promoting a cause in the County and City of Peterborough. This program provides funding of up to $500 for projects that are designed and implemented by youth for youth. Projects should be related to an important issue in our community and should be designed to make a positive contribution to peers, school, or broader community. Previous grants helped students at Crestwood build a climbing wall, helped funding the KAOS Driver Skills Rodeo, and more. Call for Submissions: The Art Gallery of Peterborough and the City of Peterborough’s Youth Council seek submissions for “by design,” a youth art show and sale of work depicting the history of Peterborough in various media. Artists must be between the ages of 10 and 21 years of age, and fill out an application for their work to be considered for the show. Astronomy Day: The Peterborough Astronomical Association and the Peterborough Museum & Archives celebrate International Astronomy Day 2008 from 1 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 10 p.m. at the Museum (Museum Dr., at 300 Hunter St. E., Peterborough). Participants will see star shows in the portable planetarium as well as displays, presentations and telescope viewing. Raffle tickets will be sold with the grand prize of a telescope. Concert: Kawartha Youth Orchestra presents Concert and Reception beginning at 3 p.m. at Market Hall (336 George St., Peterborough). Brian Finley will be performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto #3. Mr. Finley is the co-founder and Artistic and Managing Director of the Westben Arts Festival Theatre in Campbellford. The KYO will also be performing: Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #2, Elgar's Romance for Bassoon and Orchestra, Wieniawski's Violin Concerto #2, de Beriot's Violin Concerto #9, Gluck's Dance of the Blessed Spirits. Concert: Encore Children's Productions presents Music Arsenal: Carnival of the Animals at 3 p.m. at Crombie Theatre, Fleming College (200 Albert St. S., Lindsay). Quebec’s Musical Arsenal will present this puppet show based on the music of Camille Saint Saens. This is a musical odyssey filled with surprises, including a wide variety of animal puppets big and small which will delight young audiences. Tickets are $10 at door. Participants will get tips, advice and learn how to create a supportive environment for your child to thrive by starting a homework club. Youth Film Fest: Galaxy Cinemas and the United Way present the Starlight Film Fest from midnight - 7:30 a.m. at the Galaxy Cinemas (Water St., Peterborough). High school students can enjoy an all-night marathon of movies, munchies, music and unlimited arcade games. Movies include: Transformers, Hairspray, the Bourne Ultimatum, the Simpsons Movie, Spider-Man 3 and Blades of Glory. Tickets are $20. All proceeds support United Way of Peterborough & District. Bike Rodeo: The Peterborough County-City Health Unit, the City of Peterborough, Wild Rock, and the Peterborough Cycling Club present the Paths and Pedals Bike Rodeo and Trail Day from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Rogers Cove (Maria St., Peterborough). All are invited to participate in the 3rd annual Bike Rodeo, get bikes checked, helmets properly fitted, and to practice and learn new cycling skills. Event organizers promise lots of fun and a chance for each participant to win a birthday party package at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre. There is no cost to participate. KidzArt is a week jam-packed with painting, collage, mixed media, beading, paper mache, global crafts, fabric, clay, colour, texture, glue, glitter and more!
