About Maestro Michael Newnham

Maestro Michael Newnham

A native of Hamilton, Michael Newnham pursued his musical education at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, the Indiana University School of Music, and the University of Toronto. He became an Apprentice Conductor with the Royal Conservatory Orchestra in Toronto (1983-85), and played with the Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphonies. His teachers include Boguslaw Madey, Georg Tintner and Franco Mannino. While still a student, he became a member of the Conducting Staff of the Warsaw Chamber Opera, leading performances of Mozart’s "Le Nozze di Figaro", "Die Zauberfloete" and "Mitridate", as well as "Il Matrimonio Segreto" of D. Cimarosa to great critical acclaim.

Mr. Newnham has guest-conducted many European symphony orchestras and has appeared at the Warsaw Mozart Festival. In 1996, he was a guest conductor at the Warsaw Operetta Theatre, "Roma", where he conducted performances of Mozart’s "The Magic Flute".

Michael Newnham has also been active as a conductor in Korea. He has appeared with the Taegu City Symphony Orchestra and the Nova String Ensemble in Taegu, as well as with the Taegu-Hyosung Catholic University Symphony Orchestra, where he was invited to serve three semesters as Guest Professor-Conductor of Orchestras between 1995 and 1997.

He was presented the "Best Conductor Award" at the International Workshop for Operatic Conductors at the East Slovakian State Opera in Kosice, Slovakia in July 1998, and returned to that theatre in April 1999 to conduct Verdi’s "Aida". In Canada, he has been active as a guest conductor with several symphony orchestras, and has been Music Director for Tchaikovsky’s "Nutcracker" with the Kiev Classical Ballet.

Michael is currently Music Director of the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra, the Kawartha Youth Orchestra, the Niagara Youth Orchestra, and is a faculty member of Music at Port Milford. He has recently conducted a special gala concert for the 25th Anniversary of the papacy of John Paul II featuring soloists Helmut Lotti and Georghe Zamfir at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. This season also sees him performing with Symphony New Brunswick, the Scarborough Philharmonic as well as being Music Director for performances of R. Murray Schafer’s ‘Patria: The Enchanted Forest’.

In December 2004, Mr. Newnham was presented the Order of Merit from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Poland for his services in propagating Polish culture and music in Canada.
