Peterborough English Country Dancers

The Peterborough English Country Dancers are a group formed in Peterborough in 1978 for the enjoyment of country dances and traditional music. They hold community dances monthly from September to April, and meet occasionally in the summer months. Weekend workshops and dance parties are held from time to time giving an opportunity to meet other dancers from across Ontario and beyond. The group has performed at many cultural event in Peterborough, as well as in Kingston, Toronto and elsewhere. From 1983 onwards it has presented a series of musical dramatizations based upon literary classics.

English country dancing started in the rural communities of Old England, and was brought over by the early settlers to New England and remains a living tradition on both sides of the Atlantic. The dances are easy to learn, and require no difficult footwork. All dances are taught by experienced callers, and normally feature live music by Peterborough's own English country dance band 'The Jovial Beggars'. Beginners (singles or couples) are always welcome.
